I joined a gym in May of 2017. It’s a CrossFit gym called CrossFit Crib in Kannapolis, NC. I was tired of being a fat, lazy guy and wanted to commit myself to get into better shape. For the first 7 months, I took a class called Code Orange – this is a high-intensity, cardio/core-strength-focused, coach-led class that serves as a kind of conditioning or bootcamp class to introduce you to CrossFit. I hadn’t done much in the realm of fitness for many years, and so I needed a good kick in the butt to get going. The gym’s owners, Scott and Karol Sandusky, have been amazing. They head up the community of members in a family-driven, supportive environment that makes you want to keep coming back. I convinced my wife to join along the way, and now it’s become such a routine part of our lives. In December 2017 I started taking CrossFit classes, and have since noticed a major improvement in my overall strength and stamina. The gym hosts a full spectrum of commited athletes, men and women of a wide age range, who are devoted to improving themselves and uplifting one another. Very cool place.
The CrossFit Open takes place annually, giving athletes of all strengths and weaknesses an opportunity to test themselves against the world’s best – many participate as just a way to monitor their own progress from year to year.
Here are some photos I took of the Open 18.2 workout at CrossFit Crib on 3/2/18 – I shot these on the Nikon D810 with an off-camera 500w HSS strobe and the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 lens. The dramatic shadows make for a good effect. I think next time, though, I’ll go with no strobe and a faster lens, 50mm f/1.4:
